The ca. 1725 John Chads House

The ca. 1725 John Chads House

Quaker John Chads–ferryman, farmer, and tavern owner–built this house of Pennsylvania field stone around 1725. After his death in 1760, his wife lived on in the house, refusing to evacuate even during the cannonball-filled skies of the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777. The house fell into disrepair in the 20th century but saw new life in 1968 when the Chadds Ford Historical Society purchased and restored it as a historic house museum.

The Chadds Ford Inn

The Chadds Ford Inn

Those in the know differ on exactly when this building was constructed, but parts of it probably date back to the 18th century. It has enjoyed recent restoration and a new incarnation as the Brandywine Prime restaurant, but it will always be the Chadds Ford Inn to me.
