Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was formed out of the southeastern part of Chester County on September 26, 1789, and was named for the Delaware River. Populated by half a million people, Delaware County residents range from working class people in cities like Chester and Darby to wealthy suburbs of the Main Line, just west of Philadelphia.
